Friday, 5 August 2022 to Friday, 12 August 2022 2022

"If happiness has not its seat and centre in the breast. We may be wise or rich or great but never can be blessed. No treasures, no pleasures can make us happy long. The hearts aye the part aye that makes us right or wrong"; so Robert Burns declared 200 years ago. We will focus on meditations of the heart; practice exercises that will lead us into the hidden depths and treasures that lie in our hearts; explore the heart opening potential of living for a week in spiritual community with like-minded people.

Life of Objects - wabi sabi & animism

Friday, 11 March 2022 to Friday, 18 March 2022 2022

Fall in love with life again. A Retreat on the Art of Perception.

When we realise that what we experience is not the ‘thing out there’ but our own perception, our relationship with things is suddenly changed. The teapot and the bowl are no longer objects separate from us, but alive and intimately connected to us, even a part of us.

“Picking violets by the side of the road,

I forgot my begging bowl.

How sad you must be, my poor little bowl.”

Turning the heart towards freedom

Friday, 25 February 2022 to Friday, 4 March 2022 2022

This retreat will be based around talks, discussion and reflection on the teaching of the 4 Mind Turning Reflections. The subjects of the four reflections are the precious opportunity offered by human life; death and impermanence; karma, or the fact that actions have consequences; and the disadvantages of worldly existence, or suffering. These might be called ‘the facts of life’ in the Buddhist perspective. They are wake-up calls, jolts to our complacency, articulations of the troubling voice of reality as it impacts on our immediate experience.

Wabi Sabi - ordinary beauty

Friday, 29 October 2021 to Friday, 5 November 2021 2021

Wabi sabi is an aesthetic, which finds beauty and truth in our simple, ordinary experience. It originated in Japan in the 16th century when the term ‘wabi’ referred to poverty, ‘sabi’ to loneliness. At that time, while hermits were living this poor and lonely life, a cultural shift happened and this simplicity of living took the place of luxury as the highest aesthetic.
